Basti is a common term in Ayurveda, well known as a ‘container’. When we talk about Basti in terms of birth preparation - it is the bowel that ‘holds’ the oil, hence basti is an oil enema more specifically, matrabasti or anuvasana basti.
It’s the process of internal oleation and pacifying/nourishing apana VAYU dosha in preparation for birth.
Kit includes; nelaton catheter, 60ml syringe, oils – Ayurvedic tailam.
OIL: ghee or organic black sesame are quite commonly recommended, unctuous, gentle and more than efficient.
*Herbal oils should only be used as advised by Ayu Practitioner - understanding the condition of vayu dosha before any herbal recommendations/administration is recommended, herbal oils have a stronger effect on the body and can initiate labour.
PROCESS: commenced from week 38 ~ 42 weeks. This treatment depends on the condition of vata dosha.
Explicit guidelines are provided with purchase.
WHY BASTI?
When in balance, the normal flow of apana aata – (the sub-vayu that governs the umbilicus and below), is downward, as such, apana vata direrects all movement & physical function below the navel in a down and outward motion.
A vital way to regulate apana vata is via the oleating the colon. Oleating Vata at the centre of its home in the body.
This ensures correct flow and movement of the doshas in preparation for birth - down and outward!
When we oleate the tissues, they become more pliable, less resistant to trauma and birth flows through.
Note: it is a fine line between nourishing Vata and hyperstimulating it. It is best to follow guidance from qualilfied a qualified Doula or Practitioner.
